Our story

Two friends, one problem, and the last lunch box you will need

Blockhütte was started in 2019 by two friends who could not find a lunch box worth keeping, so they built one. Nils and Malte still run it themselves, from Hamburg, with no investors behind them.

Nils and Malte, the founders of Blockhütte

How it started

We met at nursery and never lost touch. Malte went into sales, Nils into automotive production, and both of us spent years on the road eating whatever was quickest. It showed.

Cooking it yourself and taking it with you was the obvious fix. Finding something to take it in was not: everything was plastic, or gave up after a few months. So we built our own, in the garage of Nils' parents in Paderborn.

If we have this problem, we thought, other people have it too. Blockhütte started in 2019 and moved to Hamburg in 2022. The footer still reads Designed with love in Paderborn.

What we build against

The throwaway industry earns its money when things end up in the bin. We earn ours when nothing does.

A lunch box should not need replacing in two years. So we build in steel, not plastic, and we sell every wearing part on its own. When the seal gives up, you buy a seal. Not a new box.

Built for life. Blockhütte is German for log cabin: a place you build once, properly.

How we prove it

  • Material. 304 (18/8) stainless steel, uncoated inside, so your food touches nothing but steel. DEKRA, one of Europe's leading independent testing organisations, tests it every year for food safety and for lead.
  • Repairability. Lids, seals, dividers, clasps, stoppers, even the bottle body: every part is in the shop on its own.
  • Guarantee. Three years on everything we sell, in addition to your statutory rights, and 60 days to try it first. No quibbles.

Meet Nils

Numbers, stock planning and everything behind the shop, so that what you order is actually there. Nils came out of automotive production, where he learned how things are made at scale but never saw a single decision through to a finished product.

He still uses the first box he ever built. Dents and a replacement seal included.

Meet Malte

The product: sourcing, development, quality and design. Designed in Hamburg, engraved in Bremen, made to our designs and specifications. If a seal does not seal, that is Malte's problem.

He came from sales and still measures a product by what the people using it say. He works on the detail you only notice years later. It took twenty samples before the first lid sat properly; the one in the shop is the twenty-first.

Where we want to get to

We would like the sustainable choice to be the easy and affordable one: products reliable enough to keep, and parts that let you keep them.

Write to us if the shop has not answered something. We reply in English, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm UK time.
